Course programme
Delegates on this one-day course will be led through an exploration of what we mean by wellbeing and how to nurture it in early childhood. In the morning the course introduces a new theoretical approach to child development - the ABC of wellbeing; and outlines the principles and mechanisms of wellbeing development. It examines what wellbeing development looks like in practice, and how it can be incorporated into real-life daily experiences in early years settings. In the afternoon the focus is on wellbeing play: what it is, and what children need, to play in this way. The course presents a balance of theory and practice, bringing new and thought-provoking perspectives to early childhood professionalism. It is delivered through a combination of tuition, video case studies, discussion, group tasks and individual planning time.

Overall aim
This course aims to underpin quality provision for children’s wellbeing, especially in relation to personal, social and emotional development, and communication and language. It offers evidence-based strategies which aim to support life-long wellbeing and resilience by transforming the situations and experiences of babies and young children in their everyday lives in settings and at home.

Intended learning outcomes
Delegates will have opportunities to:
• explore a new theory of child development in relation to the ABC of wellbeing
• understand how wellbeing develops in the youngest children through companionable attention
• consider everyday situations and experiences that are rich in wellbeing opportunities
• gain information about children’s needs in relation to wellbeing play
• reflect on their own professional wellbeing, and plan next steps.

Who should attend?
Advisers, managers and practitioners working with young children from birth to six and their families; in the maintained, private and voluntary sectors.
